Stuck at home but nonetheless proactive, the pioneer batch of Laguna University Senior High School graduates spearheaded a donation drive aimed at providing an added layer of protection to the teachers who helped nurture them.
LU-SHS Alumni banded together under the leadership of Jeanne Marie Lawas, Micah Punzalan, Janelle Ebron, and Chenelyn Esguerra, when they recognized the urgent need for sanitation supplies to contribute in mitigating the risk of COVID-19 transmission in the school’s premises. Despite the quarantine-borne limitations, the former students managed to hold several virtual planning sessions where they brainstormed on how they will go about the proceedings of the donation drive.
They identified items of utmost priority and devised a way to contact possible donors by means of creating posters with pertinent transaction information for both in-kind and monetary donations. To increase their reach and appeal to more people, they dubbed the drive as “Tulong-Agapay” and further expounded on their objective of not just showing gratitude but also helping their SHS teachers cope with the effects of the pandemic.
September 07, 2020 was the day when all the efforts poured into the drive finally came into fruition. As the strict quarantine protocols eased, the donation drive committee members along with John Michael Atienza, and AJ Gregorio of SHS Batch 2018 and Rey Manuel Batacan, a volunteer, personally visited Laguna University to hand in the generated items which include: face mask, face shield, alcohol, foot bath, chlorine, foot-operated alcohol dispenser, alcohol spray canister, and disinfectant alcohol.
They initially planned on providing materials solely for sanitation and protection, but as they have received an unprecedented amount of help from other graduates, private individuals, and different organizations who champion the same cause, they were able to also provide school supplies such as bond paper and printer ink as well as 30 food packs for the employees of Laguna University.
The school officials headed by Dr. Charlemagne G. Laviña, the University President, Dr. Bartolome T. Tanguilig III, the Vice President for Academic Affairs together with the OIC-Principal of SHS, Mrs. Agnes G. Ycogo were surprised and grateful for the act of generosity of these SHS graduates. Truly, the core values of LU were instilled in these young individuals as reflected in their deed of kindness.
