Bachelor of Arts in Communication’s 4th year students partook in the two-day Communication and Media Studies Conference at Lyceum of the Philippines University – Cavite last October 20 to 21. Philippine Association of Communication Education Board (PACE) spearheaded the event with the theme: “Communication and Media Education in the time of AI: Values, Ethics, and Practices.”
First day of the PACE student camp
It started with a roll call of the over 40 Higher Educational Institutions that participated the event, followed by the words of welcome from the LPU – Cavite’s Vice President for Administration, Dr. Maria Teresa O. Pilapil. The PACE President Mark Lester M. Chico also shared his opening message, before the program of the two-day event was discussed by Ms. Rachelle Ann Barraquias, Conference Chair.
The event was full of engaging and information-filled activities, that included plenary and parallel sessions led by different coaches. Dr. Dominic Ligot, a co-founder of the Analytics Association of the Philippines, and Dr. Maarit Jaakkola, a co-director of Nordicom led the plenary sessions on Ethics and Practices throughout the morning of the conference.
Before the camp sessions started, the launch of the PACE History Book entitled “PACE Turning 50: A History of the Philippine Association of Communication Educators” took place. It was written by a long-time veteran and prominent Asian Communication educator and author, Dr. Crispin C. Maslog.
In order to establish a strong network of sociability among the many event participants, the first day of the event wrapped up with instructors and students socializing. The participants in this activity were able to expand their network of peers who share the same interests.
Second day of the PACE student camp
The second part of the plenary session was then continued on the second day of the event, whereas the Assistant Professor and Director Office of International Affairs at Hungkuang University, Taiwan, Dr. Hsuan-Pei (Jason) Ho discussed his lecture about values. He catered questions from students and faculty through a conference.
Following the conclusion of the afternoon plenary proceedings, Dr. Jason Ho also administered the oath-taking of the newly elected PACE Board of Trustees for the year 2023–2025.
The announcement of the 2024 CMSC Host and the giving of certificates to every university that participated in the two-day student camp marked the event’s progression toward its closing program. The session was ended by a closing remark delivered by Mr. Mark Lester M. Chico, the re-elected PACE President.
PACE Student Camp
Five cram-packed parallel camp sessions were planned as part of the two-day event to divide the students into their various specializations in marketing, public relations and advertising, journalism and broadcasting, film and photography, and other communication and media-related activities.
On the first day, Camps 1 and 2 got underway, and on the second day, Camps 3, 4, and 5. Communication students brought their distinctive and noteworthy initiatives from their respective universities. Students had a chance to share their remarkable projects with other communication students who attended the various camps during the pitching and coaching sessions.
This does not only opens the door for students to share ideas and learn from one another, but it also provides the chance for students who have similar interests and areas of competence to work together towards a collaborative project.
