COEd’s New Dean Welcomes First-Year Students at 2025 General Assembly

Dr. Rosalie D. Buban, the newly appointed dean of the College of Education (COEd), officially welcomed first-year students and transferees during the college’s 2025 General Assembly held on August 20 at the Laguna Sports Complex Multipurpose Gymnasium.

In her address, Dr. Buban encouraged students to approach challenges with a positive mindset, noting, “Life has 10 percent of the things that you have no control of, but 90 percent of it consists of your response to things.” She also introduced a new acronym for COEd — Character, Outstanding, Edification, and Drivenness — which she described as qualities that define an excellent teacher.

Leiann Margarette Malapaya, a 2nd-year English major, said she was inspired by the dean’s message, adding that the acronym is “vital not just to survive this program but to fulfill our calling.”

Laguna University President Dr. Charlemagne G. Laviña also delivered welcoming remarks and emphasized the importance of competence and attitude among future educators.

Faculty members and the Officers of COED’s Recognized Student Organizations (RSO) led the reorientation covering the university’s vision and mission, COEd’s logo, school uniforms, the iLearnU system, student organizations, the retention policy, and the qualifying exam.

In the afternoon, students participated in activities and booths organized by RSOs, including ELITES’ photobooth, MOVERS’ “Tindahan ni Aling Nena,” The Chroniclers’ “Snatch Game,” COEd ACE’s Group Charades, and LIKAS AGHAM and UMMALU’s collaborative “Answer Wars.”

New students expressed mixed reactions to the event. Angel Nadine Briones Jaugan, a first-year BPED student, said the games were “fun and exciting” and helped bring students closer. However, Math major Leander Oca noted that while the activities were enjoyable, the venue was uncomfortable for the “Old Money” theme due to the heat.

The assembly concluded with an enrichment game led by MENTORS, COEd’s highest student organization, where new students passed through a human tunnel formed by upper-year students as a symbolic rite of welcome.

MENTORS President Jessimiel Alzona expressed gratitude for the event’s success and looked forward to future activities of the college.
