Several Laguna University (LU) personnel actively engaged in a 2-day training on fiber treatment and processing through a partnership with the Department of Science and Technology– Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), October 2-3, 2025.
This initiative, coordinated by the Research and Development Center (RDC) led by Dr. Marie Joy Q. Elomina, equipped LU staff with vital skills in fiber production and safety procedures. During the 1st day, Ms. Gizelle Nanit and Mr. Jay Marlou Discipulo, both Project Technical Assistant IV of DOST-PTRI, discussed the safety precautions, especially when handling chemicals.
Furthermore, Mr. Kent Melvin Gomez, Science Research Analyst, assisted by Mr. Raymond Cepe, demonstrated the five processes in fiber treatment (woolenization, neutralization, degumming, scouring & bleaching, and fiber softening). Through each process, participants were given a chance to do the procedures with their guidance.
On the 2nd day, Mr. Henry Basas Jr., Science Aide, had a demonstration on fiber processing using the machines. Attendees were able to see the final output of fiber treatment and processing.
Lastly, DOST-PTRI specialists also emphasized the importance of time and temperature control in producing high-quality fibers.
Overall, this activity strengthens LU’s role as the home of CALABARZON’s first textile hub and reaffirms the University’s commitment to innovation and industry partnerships.
