The Laguna University (LU) Research and Development Center recently hosted an impactful 2-in- 1 seminar on March 26, 2025, underscoring the transformative power of research in academia and society. The seminar featured two timely topics: “The Power of Storytelling in Research: Effective Communication of Research Findings” presented by Dr. Marie Joy Q. Elomina, and “Leveraging Open Access Resources for Research and Scholarly Communication” led by Dr. Norayda M. Dimaculangan.
In his opening remarks, University President Dr. Charlemagne Lavina emphasized that research is the defining hallmark of a university, setting it apart as an institution of higher learning capable of generating knowledge, challenging existing ideas, and solving pressing societal issues. “Research is not merely an academic exercise; it is the lifeblood of innovation and progress. It enables us to create solutions to real-world problems, foster collaboration across disciplines, and contribute meaningfully to our communities and beyond,” Dr. Lavina stated.
He urged faculty, students, and researchers to work together in cultivating a strong research culture at LU—one that champions inquiry, fosters collaboration, and upholds academic integrity. Dr. Lavina’s message resonated deeply with attendees as he highlighted how research not only elevates the university’s reputation but also drives societal transformation.
Session Highlights
- The Power of Storytelling in Research
Dr. Marie Joy Q. Elomina captivated participants with her insights on how storytelling can transform complex research findings into narratives that resonate with diverse audiences. She demonstrated techniques for framing research as a story with clear beginnings, middles, and ends while using relatable examples and visuals to engage listeners effectively. The key takeaway is that “Stories are the bridges that connect data to hearts, making research not just understood but unforgettable.”
- Leveraging Open Access Resources for Research and Scholarly Communication
Dr. Norayda M. Dimaculangan emphasized the importance of open access in democratizing knowledge and enhancing collaboration across disciplines. She provided practical strategies for navigating open access platforms to maximize the visibility and impact of research while fostering inclusivity in knowledge dissemination. The key takeaway: Open access ensures that knowledge benefits everyone by breaking barriers to collaboration and innovation.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Rose D. Buban, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), reminded attendees that research is a journey: “What matters most is not just completing your research but crafting a story that resonates with people—one that creates meaningful impact on the community and society.” Her words left participants inspired to approach their research endeavors with creativity, purpose, and a focus on making a difference.
This seminar reinforced Laguna University’s commitment to advancing research as the cornerstone of academic excellence and societal progress. Researchers were challenged to embrace storytelling techniques and open access practices to make their work more engaging, accessible, and impactful.
As Dr. Lavina aptly stated: *“Research is what defines us as a university—it is our contribution to shaping the future.”* With this vision in mind, LU continues to champion innovation through its Research and Development Center, inspiring its academic community to lead boldly in addressing today’s most pressing challenges.
Stay tuned for more transformative events as Laguna University strengthens its role as a hub for knowledge creation and societal advancement!
