LU Guidance & Counseling Office Empowers Students with Self-Concept and Coping Strategies Seminar

The Guidance Counseling Office (GCO) of Laguna University headed by Dr. Gualolarina C. Fernandez EdD, RGC, recently organized a seminar focusing on self-concept, coping strategies, and the goals of psychological assessment. The seminar took place at the Laguna Sports Complex Gymnasium on May 15, 2023, and was attended by first and second-year college students from various disciplines.

The primary objective of the seminar was to provide students with assistance and raise awareness about the potential stressors they may encounter in their lives. The event aimed to equip attendees with effective strategies and skills to assess and manage stress on their own.

The seminar featured three distinguished lecturers who delivered insightful presentations. Ms. Jean Lianel Agawin, discussed Self-Concept/Awareness. During her session, Ms. Agawin engaged the students in an activity, encouraging them to define themselves in social, spiritual, political, and digital contexts. This exercise aimed to foster an understanding of the uniqueness of individuals and promote self-acceptance while developing a deeper understanding of personal identities.

Ms. Marianne Partiza Balatan addressed the various types of stress that students often face. She emphasized the negative impact of overthinking and guided the attendees on how to cope with negative thoughts. Ms. Balatan also emphasized the importance of recognizing when to employ healthy coping strategies, thereby empowering students to effectively manage their stress levels.

Mr. Christian James Espayos concluded the seminar with a discussion on the Goals of Psychological Assessment. He shed light on the tools utilized in evaluating an individual’s mental health during the assessment process. Mr. Espayos also highlighted the distinction between Psychological Testing and Psychological Assessment, providing valuable insights into the methodologies employed in each.

The seminar, organized in collaboration with the Psychology Department of Laguna University, concluded with a collective realization that many students experience stress in their lives.

The seminar served as a testament to Laguna University’s commitment to students’ well-being and mental health, as it continues to provide valuable resources and guidance to its students in navigating the complexities of life.
