Information and Service Caravan in Child Labor in Celebration of the 5th Anniversary of the Institutionalization of the Nation Council Against Child labor

Laguna University took part in the “Information and Service Caravan in Child Labor in Celebration of the 5th Anniversary of the Institutionalization of the Nation Council Against Child labor” last September 21, 2024 at the Laguna Sports Complex Gymnasium This joint project between the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-RO and DOLE-PO), Public Employment Service Office of Laguna (PESO-Laguna), Laguna University, and other organizations, both from the private and public sectors aimed to strengthen protection against child labor, trafficking, and abuse through government intervention and livelihood.

The activity started with a prayer and was followed by the Philippine National Anthem. The activity was formally opened by Atty. Marion S. Sevilla (Assistant Regional Director). The message of support from the Provincial Government of Laguna and 2nd District of Laguna was delivered by OIC- Provincial PESO, Ms. Mary Jane T. Banasihian-Corcuera (representative of Gov. Ramil L. Hernandez and Cong. Ruth M. Hernandez)). Dr, Monette O. Bato, the Laguna University was represented by Mr. Tony Angelo C. Alvaran (PALO Director). Also present in the event were the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Assistant Secretary Amuerfina R. Reyes, Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns Director Ahmma Charisma Lobrin-Satumba, and DOLE Laguna Provincial Director Guido R. Recio.

The National Council Against Child Labor (NCACL) headed by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) conducted an awareness campaign on child labor policies of government services. Beneficiaries were from the CALABARZON on area. More than a hundred former child laborers (with their parents or guardians) attended the event.  Activities included ceremonial livelihood package distribution, services caravan, and interactive games for kids.

Other free medical services included some laboratory tests, chest x-rays, HIV screening and counseling, oral prophylaxis, tooth extraction, fluoride varnish, and dental checkups. Interactive activities such as face painting, games, a puppet show, and a photo booth were also included in the event.

Parents and guardians of the beneficiaries also received livelihood packages through the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program (DILP), while the child laborers were given school supplies and other materials through Project Angel Tree.

Real-life experiences of people who have gotten out of child labor through the programs of the council and DOLE, including the Philippine Program Against Child Labor (PPACL), were shared during the program through an AVP and testimonial of success stories.

The highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement by the partner government offices comprising the Regional Council Against Child Labor to intensify the inter-agency collaboration to successfully eliminate child labor.
