COEd Holds Seminar on Neurodiversity in Education

The Laguna University College of Education (CoEd) conducted a seminar on neurodiversity in education on September 3 via Google Meet, highlighting the importance of inclusive teaching practices for learners with diverse needs.

Organized by the Experiential Learning courses committee, the event was attended by fourth-year CoEd students and aimed to define neurodiversity, identify the common learning needs of students with ADHD, autism, and dyslexia, and equip future teachers with strategies that promote empathy and learner-centered teaching.

In her opening remarks, BEED Program Coordinator Sweetsell D. Texon emphasized the need for inclusive classrooms. “It is a call to create a classroom where students do not have to fit the mold but instead be given the space to shine in their own extraordinary ways,” she said.

Dr. Mary Argie Lyn Soriano, the first speaker, discussed Understanding Neurodiversity: From Awareness to Acceptance. She stressed that neurodivergent learners have unique strengths that must be recognized and nurtured. “They think differently, that is why we call them differently abled. Sometimes there are things they excel at that others are not. We must empower neurodivergent individuals to utilize their strength and live fully without being limited by stigma or exclusion,” she explained.

The second resource speaker, Ms. Mariel Celeste G. Prresidente, tackled Inclusive Teaching Strategies for Neurodiverse Learners. She underscored the role of compassion in teaching. “Be mindful and empathetic. We will teach not by the book but by the heart,” she said.

The program concluded with closing remarks from BSED Program Chair Leah E. Perez, who thanked the participants and speakers. “Today’s seminar reminds us that every learner has unique strengths. As educators, it is our responsibility to nurture those strengths and create a classroom where everyone feels valued,” she remarked.
