Firewall’s Up, Zero Trust In: LU BSIT Students Strengthen Cybersecurity Skills

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) students of Laguna University enhanced their digital defense skills through a cybersecurity webinar titled “Hack Proof: Mastering Cybersecurity Essentials” held on October 1, 2025, via Zoom.

The event featured discussions from industry professionals who shared practical insights on protecting digital spaces. Hosted by Mr. Geram Sam Perez, ITS_LU President, the webinar opened with a prayer, national anthem, and the Laguna University Hymn presented through an audiovisual presentation.

BSIT Program Chair Ms. Chrisna L. Fucio welcomed the participants, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity literacy in today’s digital age. She encouraged students to maximize the learning opportunity to stay safe and responsible online.

Laguna University President Dr. Charlemagne G. Laviña highlighted the spiritual and moral dimensions of cybersecurity in his inspirational message, stating that “cybersecurity is not only a technical battle; it is also a spiritual metaphor.” He underscored the need for vigilance, discipline, and continuous learning both in digital and personal life.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Marlon L. Atanacio also delivered a special message, stressing the relevance of strengthening cyber defense amid rising cases of online hacking and fraud.

AWS Technical Manager Mr. Edward Humphrey C. Isles led the morning session with his talk on “Mobile Application Security and Modern Scams Through Social Engineering.” He discussed data privacy laws, mobile app security, and strategies to avoid digital fraud, reminding students that learning from mistakes is essential to growth.

In the afternoon, Software Development Leader Mr. Renz Carlo P. Dumalag discussed “Introduction to Secure Coding Practices: A Student’s Guide to Building Safer Software.” He analyzed a real-world SQL injection case and explained preventive measures aligned with the Open Worldwide Application Security Project (OWASP) standards.

ITS_LU Vice President for Planning Mr. Elmer Jeremiah Reyes closed the event by expressing gratitude to the speakers and participants, encouraging students to continue pursuing excellence in technology and innovation.

The seminar served as a vital platform for equipping BSIT students with essential cybersecurity knowledge, preparing them to face the challenges of the digital landscape with awareness, skill, and responsibility.
