Laguna University’s College of Education (CoEd) formally welcomed its new batch of first year students through the general assembly themed “Guro Goes Retro: Igniting Your Passion for Education” held on August 28, 2024. The event was spearheaded by the department’s Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs).
The program began with an opening prayer led by Chelzy Delos Reyes, followed by a re-orientation conducted by Program Chair Leah E. Perez. She discussed the university’s mission and vision, outlined expectations for first-year students, and introduced the department’s faculty.
Ms. Jovelle Reyes discussed the symbolic elements of the College of Education logo, which represent the ideals and values expected of education students. This was followed by Ms. Rose Nanette San Juan, who introduced the acronym “G.U.R.O.,” outlining the year-level competencies expected from CoEd students.
To deepen understanding of the department’s roots and future directions, Mr. Ronnel Palasin presented its history, while Mr. Christian Mier Escriba discussed the department’s international linkages and partnerships that could benefit students in their academic journey.
Representatives from the various RSOs shared their organization’s objectives, officers, and planned activities. Among those who presented were Ms. Ac Namit of the College of Education Mentors, Ms. Abigail Javier of Accountable Child Educators (ACE), Ms. Shanaya Ramos and Ms. Jannah Barte of ELITES, Ms. Inah Sophia Maglalang of The Chroniclers, Ms. Jessa Asuncion of Likas Agham, and Ms. Jayrazel Melendez of UMMALU.
Dr. Rosemarie Alon-Alon discussed the department’s academic grade requirements and the implications for students who fall short, while Dr. Josephine Bermudez emphasized classroom rules and expectations for face-to-face classes.
In the afternoon, the assembly shifted to a more engaging tone, starting with the T-shirt Aspiration Design Contest, which showcased student creativity. The Bachelor in Physical Education students emerged victorious for their design and confident presentation.
This was followed by CoEd Got Talent, where a variety of performances entertained the audience. Mr. Jahmiel Bonza was declared the champion for his standout act.
College Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Rosemarie Sabado, also visited to give a message of encouragement. She led the students in a pledge to nurture their passion for teaching and delivered a birthday greeting to Program Chair Leah E. Perez.
One of the highlights of the day was the Mr. and Ms. Retro competition, where students displayed creative retro-inspired fashion. Ms. Kim Dacillo, an English major, and Mr. Marc Lorence V. Sarian, a Physical Education major, were crowned winners.
The event concluded with a department-wide singing of the College of Education Hymn, officially welcoming the freshmen to the journey of becoming future educators.
