Information Technology Society of Laguna University (ITS_LU) conducted a two-day webinar titled “Mastering the Fundamentals: Getting Started with HTML and CSS” on March 8 and 15, 2025, via Zoom. The event aimed to refresh and strengthen the foundational web development skills of over 300 freshmen and sophomore students.
“The word as a master of the basics is one of the things we need to dig in on our part as an IT,” said Mr. John Wilson O. Relova, ITS_LU adviser, in his opening remarks. His message emphasized the importance of mastering foundational skills in building a strong IT career.
On March 8, Mr. Mark Villudo, a Senior PHP Laravel Developer, served as the guest speaker for the first batch. He emphasized the importance of HTML and CSS in creating structured and visually appealing web pages. Villudo guided students through a hands-on activity that demonstrated the integration of HTML and CSS and introduced Git and GitHub as essential tools for source code management and team collaboration.
“I learned a lot, especially about CSS and HTML fundamentals and how they work together,” said sophomore Arlyn Kate Chavez, reflecting on the session.
The second batch of participants joined on March 15, led by Mr. Jeffrey Torres. He began by highlighting the role of HTML as the foundation of any web page, likening it to hollow blocks in house construction. Torres discussed the visual importance of CSS and introduced JavaScript as a tool for adding interactivity and dynamic content to websites. His session also included a demonstration of the DBeaver.io database tool and an overview of full-stack development, showcasing front-end and back-end integration using JavaScript frameworks such as React.
In her closing message, ITS_LU President Mae Lim emphasized the value of the webinar in reinforcing basic knowledge. “We conducted this webinar to assist our fellow students in reinforcing their comprehension of the fundamentals, as foundational knowledge is essential for the development of a robust career in web development,” she said, adding that the event exceeded their expected number of participants, reflecting strong student engagement.
The event concluded with positive feedback from both speakers and participants, reinforcing the society’s commitment to student development and technical excellence.
