RDC Held its 2nd Institutional Teaching and Non-Teaching Research Colloquia

On June 30, 2022, the Laguna University Research and Development Center (LU-RDC) spearheaded the 2nd Institutional Teaching and Non-Teaching Research Colloquia. The Teaching Colloquium began at 8 a.m. and finished at 1 p.m. The colloquium for teaching personnel had the theme “Outcomes-Based Discoveries: Connecting Data from Theory to Reality” and featured researchers from Senior High School (SHS), College of Computing Studies (CCS), College of Education (COED), College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), and College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA). The program was moderated by Mr. Tony Angelo C. Alvaran, Director Placement, Alumni, and Linkages Office.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Marie Joy Q. Elomina, RDC Director stressed that outcomes-based research looks at how various methods, policies, practices, and other interventions affect the outcome. Comparing options and determining which is most successful depending on the outcome is the aim of outcomes research, she added.

The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Lalaine B. Ocampo, a graduate school faculty member from Colegio San Juan de Letran Calamba shared her research experiences, highlighting on the relevance of theories as the foundation of any research endeavor. It does not end on the theory alone but more importantly on how the findings can be useful to the target beneficiaries including the community.

There were six group of presenters, as follows: 1. Senior High School with Mr. Jeffrey M. Santos, Ms. Gabrielle Louise Recto and Mr. Raymond Wally Pabalan; 2. College of Computing Studies with Mr. John Ren G. Santos and Mr. Ronnie V. Edec; 3. College of Engineering with Mr. Joebert S. Melendrez and Mr. John Carlo P. Bajaro; 4. College of Education with Mr. Jhon Jhon Zotomayor, Ms. Leah Perez, and Mr. King Leonard Nograda; 5. College of Arts and Sciences with Dr. Monette O. Bato, Mr. Roel L. Fucio and Ms. Chrisna L. Fucio; and 6. College of Business Administration and Accountancy with Dr. Norayda M. Dimaculangan, Mr. Tony Angelo C. Alvaran and Mr. Aldon M. Francia.

They were evaluated by three experts in their respective fields, Dr. Marife Mustacisa- Lacaba, Associate Director of Samar State University; Dr. Nimfa G. Dimaculangan, Director of International and Local Affairs of Laguna State Polytechnic University-Santa Cruz campus, and Dr. Marcelino M. Macapinlac, Jr., Associate Professor at De La Salle University.

The panel applauded all the presenters for their study mastery. They presented the scope of their study and produced an atmosphere of excitement and good influence The main takeaways were to maintain consistency with the aims, results, and recommendations, to maintain the theoretical soundness of the parameters employed, and to read a broader range of related literature.

It was continued in the afternoon for the Non-Teaching Research Colloquium with the theme: “Refining Institutional Practices through Interactive Inquiry in a Collaborative Context.” The researchers were a collaboration of different offices. Ms. Justine Faith O. Samson, Education Research Assistant of the Research and Development Center, moderated the event, which began at 1:30 PM through Google Meet.

Dr. Marie Joy Q. Elomina, in her welcome remarks, stated that while doing research can be done independently, the non-teaching personnel were encouraged to see research as a way to explore novel concepts, find fresh solutions to old problems, and tackle challenging issues. Doing research would be more enjoyable and lighter because of exchange of ideas. She emphasized what Garrison, Anderson and Archer (2000) said: “An educational community of inquiry is a group of individuals who collaboratively engage in purposeful critical discourse and reflection to construct personal meaning and confirm mutual understanding.”

The keynote speaker and panel of reactor, Ms. Alvie Simonette Q. Alip, centered her talk on inspiring the non-teaching staff. She said that they need to be more focused on the subject at hand because completing research is something they must do beyond working hours. Ms. Alip is a University Researcher at the UP Open University Los Baños

The other panel of reactors was made up of Ms. Luisa A. Gelisan, an Assistant Professor and University Registrar at the UP Open University in Los Baños, Laguna, and Ms. Beverly R. Pabro, a university extension specialist at the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning at the UP Los Baños College, Laguna.

Ms. Julie Ann G. Soretes, Ms. Jennifer S. Cabañesas of the University Library, and Ms. Donnabel P. Mababa of the Supply Office were the first group of presenters, followed by Ms. Amelyn S. Mahinay. Ms. Agnes G. Ycogo, and Dr. Marie Joy Q. Elomina, The panel provided comments and suggestions on how they may enhance their studies after the presentations.

The aim of teaching and non-teaching research colloquia was to widen their academic involvement while also strengthening Laguna University’s research culture.
