SPORTS NEWSย | CCS Cheerdance Squad Stuns with Squid Game-Inspired Routine at LU Sportsfest 2025

The College of Computing Studies (CCS) Cheerdance Team wowed the crowd with a bold and creative performance during the Cheer Dancing Competition of Laguna Universityโ€™s Sportsfest 2025, held on February 10 at the LU Gymnasium. The event drew over 5,000 students and was highlighted by the presence of Laguna Governor Ramil L. Hernandez, who officially opened the festivities and pledged a โ‚ฑ10,000 prize for the winning team.

Opening the competition, the CCS cheer dancers, dubbed the โ€œSquid Game Gyals,โ€ captivated the audience with a routine inspired by the hit Netflix series Squid Game. Incorporating the iconic โ€œRound and Roundโ€ soundtrack, the performance featured tightly synchronized choreography, high-energy stunts, and theatrical elements that brought the theme to life.

The routine was choreographed by Mr. Jay Chris Clemente under the direction of assistant coach Ms. Abigail D. Hernandez and head coach Ms. Patrecia Toledo. โ€œWe are in awe sa performance na inilaan at ibinigay ng Squid Game Gyals sa Cheer Dance Competition,โ€ said Coach Toledo. She also commended the dancersโ€™ commitment, noting their daily rehearsals despite long hours under the sun.

Following all team performances, LU Performing Arts Club (LUPAC) alumni entertained the crowd with a high-energy dance number. As the competition wrapped up, judge Mr. Joshua Latayan addressed the audience to explain the scoring criteria and deductions before the winners were announced.

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) emerged as champion with a Drag Race-themed routine featuring neon pink costumes and silver pom-poms. The College of Education (COE) claimed second place with a routine that celebrated Filipino patriotism through a festival-inspired performance. Third place went to the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), whose Beyoncรฉ-inspired cowboy routine earned praise from both judges and spectators.

Despite not placing in the top three, the CCS Cheerdance Team left a strong impression. โ€œBeing a choreographer is hard and challenging, but when I’m with the right students/dancers, everything’s easy,โ€ said Clemente. โ€œYou all made our department proud; we served, we ate, and we left with no crumbs!โ€

The CCS teamโ€™s commitment to creativity, discipline, and performance excellence was evident throughout the competition. Though they did not bring home a trophy, their impact was undeniableโ€”and their eyes are already set on next yearโ€™s comeback.
