A Pre-deployment Orientation and Learning Session for Fourth Year Students of the College of Computing Studies (CCS) was conducted on November 18, 2022 via zoom, in preparation for their on-the-job training in the second semester of Academic Year 2022-2023.
The program started with a prayer, the National Anthem, and the Laguna University Hymn, respectively. Mr. Numeriano B. Aguado, the Dean of the College of Computing Studies, gave the opening remarks, emphasizing the significance of the event in preparing the students for the actual workplace.
The program commenced in accordance with the the following objectives:
- explain to interns the workplace proper decorum;
- allow time for interns to assess the workplace diversity in the industry; and
- define the intern’s responsibilities and teach them the internship guidelines and requirements.
Ms. Gean Paulene S. Rivera, HRMO I at Laguna University, kicked off the discussion with her topic, “Decorum in the Workplace and the New Normal Industry.” The content of her discussion primarily consisted of the basic rules or proper etiquette in the workplace and tips on how to thrive in the new normal. A personal tip was also given to conclude her discussion: “No matter how good you are, you won’t stand a chance of succeeding in any profession unless you develop a collaborative work ethic and learn to be a team player.”
Following the discussion of Ms. Rivera, Ms. Sheim Jarra Palmes, the founder, and CEO of Semicolon Connects discussed the Workforce Diversity and Multicultural Factors. The discussion consisted of several topics about diversity, like the basic types of diversity and the approaches of managing diversity. At the end of her discussion, she mentioned a quote by Sue Fitzmaurice that will help the students in their future careers: “You must go on an adventure to find out where you belong.”
Lastly, the internship guidelines were discussed by Mr. Marlon L. Atanacio, the Director of the Placement, Alumni and Linkages Office (PALO) of Laguna University. The requirements for the internship were presented, along with the guidelines and reminders to guide the students for their upcoming training. Mr. Felix Huerte Jr., BSCS PALO Coordinator, and Mr. Kurt Robin San Jose, BSIT PALO Coordinator, discussed the forms that need to be completed during the student’s internship.
After each discussion, questions and concerns from the students were addressed. The program ended with a closing remark delivered by Dr. Angelica Aquino, the Program Chair of the Computer Science Department.
