To cope with the new normal in teaching and learning, the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators (PSITE) Region IV-A conducted a free webinar with the theme: “Capacity Building in the New Normal” on November 27-28, 2020 via Zoom meeting.
Faculty members from the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and Bachelor of Science Computer attended and participated in the said webinar.
The seminar started with an invocation, followed by the welcome remarks of Mr. Boogie Boydon, PSITE National President. Dr. Amelia A. Biglete, Director, CHED Region 1V-A delivered an inspirational message.
Dr. Luisa P. Macatangay, President, PSITE IV, emphasized in her message that, the conduct of webinars may help academicians enhance their capacity in different algorithm.
The first day of the webinar covered five topics: Regression Analysis was discussed by Dr. Anna Liza A. Ramos, Administrator, SMCL, PSITE National Board, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) was discussed by Prof. Rodrigo Belleza Jr., Dean, Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation. Prof Belleza also demonstrated the ANN model using Python and TensorFlow in Google Colab. The Decision Tree and Random Forest was tackled by Prof. Jonardo R. Asor from Laguna State Polytechnic University. Prof. Asor further demonstrated the Decision Tree and Random Forest implementation using RapidMiner video. K-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm was discussed by Prof. Adomar Ilao from Malayan Colleges Laguna. The last topic of the day, Support Vector Machine (SVM), its history and application with the machine learning, was discussed by Dr. Larmie Felizcuso, PSITE VP-Mindanao.
On the second day, Mr. Geary Hinolan, Analytics Engineer, SaaS Institute, discussed Cloud Computing. Mr. Hinolan’s discussion focused mainly on cloud evolution and the comparison between the traditional stand-alone old servers and cloud services. Dr. Neil P. Barba, Director of Center for Innovation and Development, Lyceum of the Philippines Laguna, talked about Virtual Assistants. Dr. Barba identified and differentiated the existing visual assistants such as Google Assistant, Siri, Viv, Nina etc.
Before the webinar ended, Mr. Syed Raihan-Ul-Islam, Assistant Director, International Affairs, Daffodil International University (DIU), Bangladesh presented DIU’s Best Practices and Transformation for Sustainability.
For clarification, queries and other concerns, question-and-answer portion was conducted at the end of every topic.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Loupel B. Gueta, IT Supervisor, CHED 1V, emphasized that the pandemic only changed the mode of teaching, not the quality of the blended, flexible, online-offline learning. He further stressed that a CMO on common standards about online learning will be made available to ensure that Higher Education Institutions (HEI) deliver quality education amidst the pandemic.
