The Laguna University College of Health Sciences (LU-CHS) held its 3rd Annual Pinning and Candle Lighting Ceremony for Midwifery students on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the Laguna University Audio Visual Room with the theme “Gearing Towards Raising the Standard of Care”. The ceremony marked a major leap for the 15 strong-willed Midwifery students who made it through the first phase of the Midwifery profession. It is a symbolic ceremony denoting a milestone for midwifery students.
The program started with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist officiated by Rev. Fr. Mario P. Rivera, followed by the Pinning and Candlelight Ceremony. In her welcome speech, Prof. Monette O. Bato, Dean of CHS, mentioned that the pinning and candlelight ceremony is held to recognize achievements of Midwifery students as they get ready to face the more complex but fulfilling roles of being full-blown midwives. Dr. Colegio S. Gascon, Vice President for Academic Affairs, in his inspirational talk, encouraged the students to continuously seek for knowledge and grab every opportunity of being in the midwifery profession because, according to Dr. Gascon, Midwifery has a lot to offer.
Students were captivated as they listened to the Keynote Speaker Dr. Catherine V. Quintero, a smoking cessation coordinator and a hemodialysis nurse, as she explained the importance of the Pinning and Candlelight Ceremony in their profession. Dr. Quintero also urged the students to work within the standard of care advocated by the Midwifery profession. Before ending her speech, Dr. Quintero congratulated the students, their parents and loved ones, as well as the CHS faculty for a job well done.
