Making a small yet significant step towards change, the Laguna University recently implemented a program called innoHIVe (innovative HIV education) which aims to make students fully aware of the facts about HIV Transmission, Prevention and Protection principles that are tailored-fit for Senior High School students. It was conducted by the Program Leader, Prof. Marc Lester Quintana, the Program Associate, Prof. Jhonessa Layos and the Senior High School Program Volunteers.
The pioneering program about HIV/AIDS awareness campaign, innoHIVe is the outcome of the action research conducted by its program leader, Prof. Quintana.
innoHIVe consists of four subordinating programs: Program 1 is a symposium to introduce Basic Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) partnered with the Laguna AIDS Council and LU’s Office of the Student Affairs (OSAS) Program 2 is a series of focused intensive lectures that will provide comprehensive knowledge about the disease and to reinforce the prior knowledge of the students; Program 3 is a focused group discussions (FGDs) for referral, counseling and testing services; and the last subsidiary program is Program 4 which is a Film Showing Strategy which includes showing of motion pictures, documentaries and HIV/AIDS themed movies about the crisis of HIV/AIDS in the life of a person and its impact in the community.
The first program was done in cooperation with the Laguna AIDS Council and OSAS. Experts in the field of Health and Welfare were invited as resource speakers to discuss topics relevant to HIV and AIDS to students of Laguna University at the Laguna Sports Complex Gymnasium on April 20-21, 2017.
The second program was successfully undertaken with the combined efforts of the innoHIVe team in collaboration with the Senior High School advisers. This was done in order to create a learning environment for students so that they will be able to absorb the information very well and that they will have a chance to clarify some confusing details and myths about the disease.
The third and fourth program will soon be carried out this Academic Year 2017-2018, taking into consideration the timeframe and the age of the students.
The program will continuously be implemented to the Senior High School students of Laguna University every Academic Year.
