In consonance with the programs of the Department of Health (DOH) on World Immunization Day (WID) and World Health Day (WHD), Laguna University College of Health Sciences (LU-CHS) sponsored a one-day activity on April 21, 2017 at General Juan Callies Memorial District Hospital, Pakil, Laguna.
Given emphasis on the program was the involvement of the students of CHS in disseminating health information particularly on proper nutritional care to patients in the hospital. Cognizant to the fact that good nutrition and proper diet helps in the speedy recovery of patients, activities for the whole day consisted of interaction of CHS students with patients in the hospital.
However, before the activity started, the group from LU-CHS had a courtesy call to the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Rodolfo Villarin. After this, the selected students proceeded to the specific areas in the hospital where they had an opportunity to interact with patients by providing them morning care and by getting patients’ vital signs.
Lectures in different areas were conducted by CHS students. Miss Marjorie Manilay, first year, Midwifery student, conducted a lecture in the out-patient department on the importance of completing the immunization for children. At the pediatric ward, Mr. Brando Arete, first year Health Care Services (HCS) student, provided information on pneumonia, dengue and diarrhea. Mr. Jimboy Handumon and Miss Evelyn Mercado, second year HCS students, who were assigned at the Medical Surgical Department discussed the significance of infection control procedure and proper wound cleaning while Ms. Kimberly Saguid and Ms. Maria Lynor Peralta, 2nd year midwifery students conducted lectures at the Obstetric Department on newborn care and the importance of breastfeeding.
The one-day activity organized by Prof. Monette O. Bato, Dean, CHS, Prof. Edna F. Valenzuela, Program Chair, CHS, together with the Clinical Instructors, Prof. Editha A. Cajipe, Prof. Marizol V. Dorado and Prof. Jhonessa J. Layos was indeed a success.
Gratitude is due to the hospital staff and management headed by Dr. Rodolfo Villarin, Medical Director, Ms. Salome Cruz, OIC-Chief Nurse, Ms. Teresita Salas, Nurse Supervisor, and Ms. Marife De Rama, Hospital Administrator for accommodating the LU group.
