Laguna University (LU) College of Health Sciences held its 2nd Pinning and Candlelight Ceremony for Midwifery students on February 21, 2017 at the Laguna Sports Complex Gymnasium with the theme, “Midwifery: A profession Who Witnesses Everyday Miracles”. The traditional Pinning and Candlelight ceremony culminates the milestone that marks their entrance into the midwifery profession. It signifies the completion of the first phase of the midwifery education.
The program started with the Eucharistic Celebration officiated by Rev. Fr. Michael Brosas followed by the Pinning and Candlelight Ceremony. Ms. Jhonessa J. Layos, RN, Clinical Instructor, College of Health Sciences, delivered the opening remarks. Dr. Marie Joy Q. Elomina, Director of LU Research and Development Center, gave the inspirational message.
The event was highlighted by the keynote address of Ms. Marites Asajar, a registered midwife and an LU alumna. In her speech, she encouraged the students to continue to do their best as they enter the world of work. “Love your work and you will reap the benefits of your hard work for the rest of your professional and personal lives” Ms. Asejar said.
Ms. Marites Asajar, R.M. facilitated the pinning of eleven (11) midwifery students namely, Joanne A. Amorin, Aida Q. Bagayan, Lizel B. Casaclang, Mylene R. Custodio, Abegail S. Lilia,
Marjorie B. Manilay, Meriel S. Ortiaga, Andrea Nicole S. Salacup, Marlon M. Ramirez, Queen R. Sambrano and Apple C. Valles. Present during the candle lighting ceremony were their parents and loved ones who became emotional when the midwifery students gave them flowers as an expression their love and gratitude.
The Midwife’s pledge was led by Ms. Marites Asajar, RM. The activity ended with the singing of the University Hymn.
The event was hosted by the University Assistant Research Director and CHS Clinical Instructor, Prof. Marc Lester F. Quintana, RN, MAN, USRN.
